How to Live a Happy Life Essay for Class 10, Class 12 and Graduation – 500 Words

Prophet Muhammad (صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم) said, “None of you believes (completely) until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself.” Source: Sahih Bukhari

Every one of us aspires to be happy. However, there is no doubt about the fact that happiness and sorrow go hand in hand in life. Only a few lucky ones achieve the goal of being truly happy, good wishes apart. Thomas Hardy goes to the extent of saying:

“Happiness is an occasional episode in the general drama of pain.”

To me, happiness is in no way connected with material glory and eminence. One often comes across many a person who has immense power and pelf yet in craving for more and is not satisfied with his or her log. Feelings like hatred, fear, jealousy and intolerance spoil happiness. The habit of comparing and contrasting and the desire to become what others are, often leaves a sorrowful heart. Such negative passions are the outcome of not being satisfied with what one has. Inordinate desires do not let a person be at peace with life.

It is noteworthy that happiness is a relative term since the idea of a happy life varies from person to person. Some people think money is a means to happiness because it can help us satisfy our needs and wants. The bitter fact of life is that riches bring selfishness, greed, lust, dishonesty and falsehood, couples with pride and worries sometimes. And where these things exist, happiness eludes. To many, power is the source of happiness. Again, it is a misconception. Power seldom generates happiness; it always instils fear. The hedonists find joy in sense and hold the Epicurian motto “eat, drink, and be merry for tomorrow you will die.” The hollowness of this view is borne out by the fact that excess of hedonism makes one sick. There are many who adopt an escapist approach towards life. They believe that asceticism is an antidote to the woes of the world. The approach sounds interesting but too impracticable to be followed in the real life.

I believe that the secret of happiness lies in wanting the right things first, in working hard and in giving more than in receiving. It would not be out of place to cite a Chinese proverb which encapsulates my idea of a happy life:

“If you want happiness for an hour — take a nap.
If you want happiness for a day — go fishing.
if you want happiness for a year — inherit a fortune.
If you want happiness for a lifetime — help someone else.”

If we look around, we find many who are less privileged in terms of either health or wealth, or both. Life is a burden for them. They are in dire need of relief from pain and suffering. I am sure that even a small act of kindness can make a big difference. Leo Buscaglia holds:

“Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.”
