What is Thermochemistry?

“The branch of chemistry which deals with the study of heat changes accompanying a chemical reaction is known as thermochemistry”. it is a matter of common observation that energy in the form of heat is either evolved or absorbed as a result of a chemical change. This is due mostly to the breaking of bonds in the reactants and the formation of new bonds in the products. Bond breaking absorbs energy but bond-making releases it. The overall energy change that occurs, results from the difference between energy supplied for the breaking of reactant bonds and that evolved the making of product bonds.

What is Heat of a Reaction?

“The amount of heat evolved or absorbed in a chemical reaction under standarard conditions is called as heat of a reaction.” Substances exist, because they possess energy. Different substances have different amounts of energy associated with them. Due to this reason, the total energy of the products is never equal to that of reactants. Hence, in a chemical change, the energy in the form of heat will either be evolved or absorbed and this is called heat of reaction.

What are Types of Thermochemical Reactions?

Generally, in all chemical changes, energy is exchanged with the surroundings. When it is given out by the reaction, the change is said to be exothermic when it is absorbed, the reaction is endothermic.
