Introduction to 1st Year Chemistry Chapter 3 Gases
I am sharing complete notes of Chapter 3 Chemistry 1st year in PDF in this post. However, here is a short introduction to “Gases” which is the main topic of this chapter.
Gas
“Gas is the simplest form of matter in which the particles exist independently.”
The earth’s atmosphere is a mixture of gases. It mainly consists of nitrogen and oxygen. So we live immersed in this gaseous solution.
Properties of Gases
All the gases have the same general properties, which are given below.
1. Valume
Gases have no definite volume. They occupy all the space available to them. So the volume of the gas is equal to the volume of the container in which the gas is placed.
2. Shape
Gases do not have a definite shape. They take the shape of the container just like liquids.
3. Density
Gases have low densities as compared to those of liquids and solids. Due to this, the gases bubble up through the liquids and tend to rise up.
4. Diffusion
Gases can diffuse into each other. They also have a tendency to effuse through a small hole.
5. Compression
Due to large empty spaces present among the gas molecules, the gases can be compressed by applying pressure.
6. Expansion
Gases expand on heating. The gas also expands when the available volume of the gas is increased.
7. Joule-Thomsan Effect
When a compressed gas is allowed to expand suddenly, it causes cooling. This phenomenon is called as Joule-Thomson effect.
8. Motion
The gas molecules are in a state of continuous random motion.
9. Collision
During their movement, the molecules collide with each other and with the calls of the container.
10. Gaseous Pressure
The pressure exerted by a gas on the walls of the container depends upon the number of these collisions.
11. Inter Molecular forces
The intermolecular forces among the gas molecules are very weak.
