Define simple harmonic motion

Such periodic motion in which instantaneous acceleration of a body is directly proportional to the displacement and direction of the acceleration is towards the mean position called simple harmonic motion.

Condition to perform S.H.M are
motion of the body should be vibratory
acceleration should be directly proportional to the displacement from the mean position.
Acceleration should directed towards the mean position.

What do you mean by free and forced oscillations? Give example.

Free oscillation:

A body said to be exciting free oscillations if it vibrates with its own natural frequency without the interference of any external force. For example a simple pendulum vibrating freely with its natural force.

Forced oscillation:

If a freely oscillating system subjected to an external force, then the forced vibrations will take place. For example when the mass of a vibrating pendulum is struck repeatedly, then forced vibration produced

Driven harmonic oscillator

A physical system undergoing forced vibration known as driven harmonic oscillator.

Explain the phenomenon of Resonance. Give it example

The marked increased in the amplitude of a vibrating body under the periodic force whose period equal to the natural period of the vibrating body called resonance.

Example: a swing is a good example of mechanical resonance. It is like a pendulum with a single natural frequency depending on its length. If a series of regular pushes given to the swing . its motion can be build up enormously. If push given irregularly, the swing will hardly vibrate
