In olden times, men offered sacrifices to please imaginary gods. In our country too, we have similar superstitions. The sight of a corpse on the right side or that of a snake is considered to be ominous. One should not undertake a journey if one sneezes at the time of start. The appearance of a cat at the time of journey is always thought evil. Some old women are thought to have supernatural powers. The ugliest they are, the more powerful they are thought to be. The belief in the witches is widespread. The screeching of owls and the Ravens is thought to be a bad omen in Pakistan as well as in England. Then there is the belief in ghosts. Ghosts are common in our villages. The illiterate villagers are more superstitious than the educated ones. It is ignorance tend lack of education which gives birth to superstitions. That is why people have more faith in quacks and superstitious cures than in doctors and medicines. Their minds are rigid and they are against all progressive movements.

Superstitions always hamper the progress of people. Popular superstitions have a long history. We inherit them from our forefathers. Giants still stalk our forests. Ghosts spirits and fairs are still common in the modern world. Many cruel things have been done in the past because of belief in superstitions. Think of the fate of Joan of Ark. She was tried by churchmen. She was found guilty of witchcraft and burnt as a witch. The belief in witchcraft was responsible for the burning of many innocent men and women in Scotland.
Only education can eliminate the superstitions from the World. As knowledge increases, superstition decreases. The advancement in scientific Knowledge has removed our irrational fears and superstitions.
