Under what conditions do two or more sources of light behave as coherent sources?
Two or more sources will behave as coherent sources if they continuously emit light waves of the same amplitude, same time period, and same frequency having the same time period and same frequency having same phase or constant phase difference.
Two or more sources derived from a single source of light will behave as coherent sources.
Can visible light produce interference fringes?
Yes, visible light or white light can produce interference fringes. As interference fringe corresponding to its own wavelength. Hence the fringe pattern will be coloured at each point but they overlap. So, it would be difficult to observe the interference fringes of visible or white light.
Explain whether Young’s experiment is an experiment for studying interference or diffraction effects of light.
Young’s double slit experiment basically used to study the interference effect of light. However, the spreading of light around the edges of the slits also produces some diffraction effects but interference plays a more prominent role than the diffraction. Since diffraction occurs along with the interference in the experiment, therefore the same experiment is also used to study diffraction effects.
An oil film spreading over a wet footpath shows colors. Explain how does it happen?
The colors are seen on the oil film spreading over a wet footpath due to irregular thickness at all possible angles, we can see the interference pattern due to each color separately. It is quite possible that the condition of destructive interference for one of the seven colours is satisfied. This color disappears while the remaining six colors show their appearance.
