Class 11 Physics Chapter 7 Shorts Questions with Answers
Name the characteristics of simple harmonic motion,
Acceleration is directly proportional to the displacement from the mean position and it is always directed towards the mean position.
a = -x
The total energy of the particle executing simple harmonic motion remains conserved.
The acceleration is zero when the velocity is greater and the velocity is zero when the acceleration is greater.
Does frequency depend on amplitude for harmonic oscillators?
The frequency of harmonic oscillators does not depend upon the amplitude of vibration.
For oscillating mass-spring system:
The frequency of the oscillating mass-spring system is
f = 1/2p√k/m
It depends upon the mass m attached to the spring and spring constant k
For oscillating simple pendulum:
The frequency of the oscillation simple pendulum is given by
f = 1/2p√g/l
it depends upon the length of pendulum l and the value of gravitational acceleration g
Can we realize an ideal simple pendulum?
An ideal simple pendulum consists of a heavy but small metallic bob, suspended from a rigid frictionless support, by a long weightless, and inextensible string in the absence of air resistance. These requirements cannot fulfilled. So we cannot realize an ideal simple pendulum.
Define restoring force.
Restoring force opposes the applied force and brings the vibrating body toward the mean position. Its direction is always towards the mean position. In the case of an oscillating spring-mass system, the restoring force is
Frst = -Kx
Define time period and frequency.
Time period;
The time taken by a body to complete one vibration is called a time period.
Frequency;
The number of vibrations completed in one second is called frequency. Its units are Hz, vibration per second, and cycles per cycle. The relation between time period and frequency is
F = 1/T
