Is it possible to construct a heat engine that will not expel heat into the atmosphere?

According to the 2nd law of thermodynamics, it is not possible to construct a heat engine that can operate on a single reservoir and convert all the heat absorbed into the atmosphere. So it is impossible to construct a heat engine that will not expel heat into the atmosphere.

What happens to the temperature of the room, when an air conditioner is left running on a table in the middle of the room?

The temperature of the room will not reduce rather it will increase. The heat absorbed from the room is expelled in the same room plus a part of the work done by the compressor is changed into the heat and is expelled in the same room.

Can mechanical energy convert completely into heat energy? If so give an example.

When work is done in compressing the gas by an adiabatic process, the increase in the internal energy of the gas is equal to the work done in it.

By the first law of thermodynamics,

                                -W = +U

So, mechanical energy is converted completely into heat energy.

For example: if we rub over hands, the whole mechanical energy is converted into heat energy.

Does the entropy of a system increase or decrease system due to friction?

According to the law of increase of entropy, The entropy of a system increases in all irreversible processes As work done due to friction is changed into heat and this heat goes into the atmosphere which is an irreversible process. So, the system increases.
