Honesty is a good moral virtue. It is defined as to deal fairly and in a just manner with every body. It means that a person should be truthful and sincere in his words and action. He should practise whatever he feels true and just. An honest act demands sincerity, justice and truthfulness. Honesty is the basic quality of man’s character. It is an essential quality for every society to develop and grow. The foundation of every society rests on honesty. There is a marked difference between honesty and dishonesty.

Honesty is the first chapter in the book of wisdom.

An honest person enjoys great respect in society. He has admiration and respect in the eyes of people. He feels comfortable and secure in life. He has clear conscience. If an honest person fails in his mission, he does not feel sad. He knows that he has not deceived any body. He will trace his failure to other things than honesty. A dishonest person has no goodwill in society. He is not trusted by any body. He wants to get prosperity by short cut methods. He cheats and deceives other people. His failure is marked with a great sense of loss. He does not get consolation from his conscience. The same thing can be applied to big nations.

No legacy is so rich as honestly.

The big nations of the world are mostly dishonest. They profess one thing and do the other. They cheat the under-developed countries. They raise the slogan of peace but they make preparation for war inwardly. They tell lies shamelessly. They are dishonest in each of their actions. Honesty is not an inborn quality. It is learnt later on it is through education and training that we can learn this quality. It needs discipline and regulatrity in habits. An honest person suffers many hardships in his life. He has to forego many material temptations. He has to leave selfish motives. He should see if his words and actions are considered or not. He must have a check on his dealings. It shows that honesty is a quality which a man can learn after great struggle and hard work.

We can cite here the example of great thinkers, reformers and religious leaders of the world, who sacrificed a lot for the cause of honesty. The example of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) will not be out of place to mention here. He was a fully honest person. He was even admired and respected for his honesty by his enemies. They called him “Amin”. The Holy Prophet (PBUH) was fully consistent in his beliefs and actions. He did not move an inch from his honest and truthful stand. He (PBUH) suffered great hardships but he did not give up honesty. We quote here the example of Quaid-i-Azam. He was also an honest person. He did not sell his opinion to his enemies. It was his love for honesty and truthfulness that won Pakistan for us in the same way, many thinkers and reformers sacrificed their lives tot the sake of honesty and truth

Honesty is the fastest way to prevent a mistake from turning into a failure.

Most of the shopkeepers, businessmen and public men are dishonest in their dealings. The public servants do not do their duty faithfully. They accept bribes for misappropriating the funds. The radio, television and the newspaper are also dishonest because they conceal facts. No, doubt there are honest people in all the fields as well but they have to face many hardships as a price of honesty. However, in the end, they are the winners.
