Class 11 Physics Chapter 3 Motion and Force Short Questions with Answers

What is the difference between uniform and variable velocity? From the explanation of variable velocity, define acceleration. Give Si units of velocity and acceleration.

Uniform Velocity:

The velocity of a body is uniform if its magnitude, as well as the direction of motion, does not change.

Variable Velocity:

The velocity of a body is variable if its magnitude or direction of motion or both are changing.

Unit:      The S.I unit of velocity is ms-1
Acceleration
The time rate of change of velocity is called acceleration mathematically,

                                A = Dv/ Dt = vf – vi/Dt

Unit.
The SI unit of acceleration is ms-2

An object is thrown vertically upward. Discuss the sign of acceleration due to gravity, relative to velocity, while the object is in the air.

Upward Motion:
When an object is thrown vertically upward the sign of acceleration due to gravity is negative because the direction of gravitational acceleration is opposite to the direction of velocity.

Downward motion:

When an object is moving vertically downward the sign of acceleration due to gravity is positive because the direction of gravitational acceleration is the same as the direction of velocity.

Can the velocity of an object reverse the direction when acceleration is constant? If so, give an example.

Yes, the velocity of an object can reverse direction with constant acceleration.

Example:

When an object is thrown vertically upward, its velocity is upward but the acceleration due to gravity is downward. It comes to rest momentarily and then it moves downward, so its velocity is reversed. In both cases the magnitude of the acceleration is constant.
