Elements of group IA and IIA are called s-block elements. In electronic configuration of these elements, last electrons goes into s-orbit. The number of s-block elements are 14.
Alkali Metals:
“Elements of group IA except hydrogen ae called alkali metals. ” alkali metals include lithium, sodium, potassium, rubidium, cesium and francium. They are very reactive metals. When these metals are dissolved in water, they form strong alkaline solution. “The base which is water soluble is called alkali.”
Te name “alkali” is from Arabic language, which means “the ash”. The Arabs use this term for these metals because they found ashes of some plants were composed mainly of sodium and potassium oxides.
Alkaline Earth Metals:
“The elements of llA group are called alkaline earth metals.” Groups llA includes beryllium, magnesium, clacium strontium, barium and radium. Elements of group llA are called alkaline earth metals they produce alkalines in water and are widely sistributed in earth’s crust in the form of carbonates and silicates.
